Omega-3 Fatty Acid Learning and Education - Vision
The Learning and Education plan is focused on outreach activities for different population groups that involve teaching the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids and how current dietary recommendations for omega-3 fatty acids can be achieved. Target groups include all stages of the life cycle (e.g., infants, children, adults and elderly) and groups with special needs for omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., preterm infants, pregnant women, among others). Other groups that will be targeted include individuals at high risk for chronic diseases that could benefit from dietary omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., individuals at high risk for coronary disease, osteoporosis, dementia, as well as emerging areas).
Implementation strategies include community outreach programs (including schools), programs for health professionals (physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and dietitians), cooperative extension, among others. Programs will be web-based (e.g., podcasts, vodcasts and webinars), delivered to groups and individuals in a classroom format and one-on-one settings. In addition, information will be available in paper format for distribution.
The learning activities and programs will be evaluated for effectiveness. In addition to numbers of programs delivered, numbers of people reached and website activity, the programs developed will be evaluated for knowledge acquisition regarding omega-3 fatty acids and behavior change relative to consumption of omega-3 fatty acids. These program evaluation activities are important for ongoing delivery of effective education and learning activities relative to omega-3 fatty acids.
