Information for Consumers

A majority of adults search the Internet for information about health, nutrition and disease. Diet has been an integral part of health since the discovery of the essential nutrients in the 20th century and, more recently, in reducing diet-related chronic disease risk.
Omega-3 fatty acids are absolutely essential for development in the infant and are responsible for maintaining the normal functions of the retina, brain, and nervous system. They are effective in reducing high blood triglyceride levels, such as in the condition of hypertriglyceridemia and in lowering the risk factors for coronary heart diseases.
Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in a variety of fish and fortified, processed foods such as:
- Salmon
- Sardines
- Tuna (packed in water)
- Fortified beverages
- Enriched eggs
- Yogurt
- Infant formula
As the research progresses on omega-3 fatty acids, evidence is mounting to support new health benefits, controlling inflammatory diseases and improving mental health for example. Several professional organizations around the world (including the American Heart Association) are recommending that the public consume omega-3 fatty acids.
Throughout this site, you will find the tools and resources necessary to help you understand what omega-3 fatty acids are, where to get them, how they benefit you, and much more information.
